Last year, Elizabeth was living in New Haven and looking for ways to escape an abusive relationship.
After her daughter was born, she felt even more of a push to break free from her child’s father, but the young single mother had no familial support and felt like she had no options. She used Google search in hopes of finding a reprieve and found Malta House, a nonprofit that provides services to pregnant and parenting mothers.
“There’s a great deal of stigma for a single mother that is financially unstable,” she said. “Nobody wants to rent a room to a woman with a child.”
