Malta House Announces Resignation of Highly Respected Executive Director

Director Departs with an Impressive Legacy that Leaves Malta House Well Positioned for Continued Success in Achieving Its Mission

NORWALK, Conn., Feb. 15, 2023 — Carey Dougherty, executive director of Malta House for the past six years, will be leaving her post at the end of March to relocate to California with her family. Committed to promoting the dignity of God-given life by providing a nurturing home environment and support services for pregnant women and parenting mothers and their children, Malta House is the only transitional living program in Connecticut where a mother can stay with her baby for long-term, wrap-around support. Since its founding in 1998, Malta House has provided 8,800 nights of shelter to hundreds of mothers as they deliver their babies and rebuild their lives.

“Carey’s legacy at Malta House has been nothing short of exemplary,” says Board Chair Kim Petrone. “Her vision and leadership have enabled Malta House to realize its mission during a particularly pivotal time. Chief among her accomplishments was oversight of a $5 million capital campaign that enabled us to move to a significantly larger facility that increased our capacity by 50%, allowing us to help more mothers in need and expand our services.”

Dougherty’s tenure also resulted in a substantial increase in funding from donors and grant awards giving Malta House a firm foundation for financing its operations and programming.

“The long-term strategic plan that was recently approved provides a clear framework for delivering on our mission and values for supporting mothers in need through expanded operations and programming,” continued Petrone. “It also ensures a smooth transition for Carey’s successor.”

The Malta House Board has retained a search firm to identify a highly qualified individual to succeed Dougherty as Executive Director. Dougherty will remain in her position through the end of March before departing for California, where she will assume a leadership position with a non-profit organization.

“I leave Malta House with a heavy heart, knowing that it is poised for even greater things and a future that has never been brighter,” says Dougherty. “Working at Malta House has been a highlight of my career. I am deeply grateful for the opportunity I have had to serve our mothers and babies, and to get to know and work alongside so many wonderful people who I will always consider friends.”
